SPP International Study Stipend

Background: The Society for Pediatric Pathology has established the International Study Stipend. The stipend will be awarded to an applicant living and practicing outside the United States and Canada, either a pathologist wishing to gain expertise in pediatric pathology that is not available at their home institution, or a pathology resident with interest in pediatric pathology who is at an institution without an accredited pediatric pathology fellowship program. The stipend cannot be used for research support.

Goals:

1. To facilitate training and expertise of international pathologists in pediatric pathology, or
2. To allow a pathology resident with interest in pediatric pathology who is at an institution without pediatric pathology expertise to rotate at a children's hospital.

Use of Funds: The funds may be used to partially offset travel and living expenses incurred by either a pathologist or a pathology resident who visits another institution.

Eligibility Criteria for Pediatric Pathologist:

1. Hold a medical degree (MD, DO, or equivalent);
2. Be a full-time faculty/staff member in pathology;
3. Live and practice outside the United States and Canada;
4. Be sponsored by a member of the SPP
5. Apply for or be an affiliate member of the SPP.

Eligibility Criteria for Pathology Resident Trainee:

1. Hold a medical degree (MD, DO, or equivalent);
2. Be a resident in an accredited pathology residency training program at an institution that is without an accredited pediatric pathology fellowship program;
3. Live and practice outside of the United States and Canada;
4. Be sponsored by an SPP member.

Amount of Award: One annual award of up to $10,000 will be made to partially support travel and living expenses granted to either a pathologist or a pathology resident trainee.

Selection Process: Complete applications must be received by the SPP Research and Awards Committee no later than 11:59 PM PT on Monday, May 13, 2024. The SPP Research and Awards Committee will review all applications and announce the award by email, and at the 2024 PPS/SPP Joint Fall Meeting in Dublin, Ireland. The award will be funded on July 1, 2024.

All portions of the form must be completed. Incomplete forms will not be considered.

A complete application includes ALL of the following:

  • Brief description of the proposed training experience (limited to 2 pages, excluding references). Should include:
    • Type of training;
    • How training will be pursued;
    • How training will promote the applicant's career in pediatric pathology.
  • Itemized budget for travel and lodging expenses only (limit to 1 page; research support will not be funded)
  • Letter of support from chief or laboratory director at institution that the applicant intends to visit, indicating approval of the proposed training experience.
  • Letter of support from the applicant's chief of staff for a pediatric pathologist or letter of support from pathology residency director for a pathology resident.
