A. James McAdams Short-Term Study Stipend

Background: The Society for Pediatric Pathology and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center have established the Short-Term Study Stipend to honor A. James McAdams, M.D. The stipend will be awarded to either a pediatric pathologist to offset expenses of gaining expertise in a specialized area of pediatric pathology that is not available at their home institution, or to a pathology resident with interest in pediatric pathology who is at an institution without an accredited pediatric pathology fellowship program to rotate at a children's hospital with a strong pediatric pathology experience. The stipend cannot be used for research support.

Goals:

1. To honor the memory of A. James McAdams, M.D.
2. To facilitate training and expertise of pediatric pathologists in a specialized area of pediatric pathology only available at another institution.
3. To allow a pathology resident with interest in pediatric pathology who is at an institution without pediatric pathology expertise to rotate at a children's hospital.

Use of Funds: The funds may be used to partially offset travel and living expenses incurred by either a pediatric pathologist or a pathology resident who visits another institution.

Eligibility Criteria for Pediatric Pathologist:

1. Hold the degree of MD or DO;
2. Be a full-time faculty/staff member in pediatric pathology;
3. Be a member of the SPP.

Eligibility Criteria for Pathology Resident Trainee:

1. Hold the degree of MD or DO;
2. Be a resident in an accredited pathology residency training program at an institution that is without an accredited pediatric pathology fellowship program;
3. Be sponsored by a SPP member

Amount of Award: One annual award of up to $5,000 will be made to partially support travel and living expenses for up to one month granted to either a pediatric pathologist or a pathology resident trainee.

Selection Process: Complete applications must be received by the SPP Research and Awards Committee no later than 11:59 PM PT on Monday, May 11, 2026. The SPP Research and Awards Committee will review all applications and announce the award by email, and at the 2026 SPP Fall Meeting in Columbus, OH. The award will be funded on July 1, 2026.

Application Instructions: 

General Instructions: All portions of the form must be completed. Incomplete forms will not be considered.  A complete application includes ALL of the following:

  1. Cover Sheet
  2. Brief description of proposed training experience (limited to 2 pages, excluding references). Should include:
    • Type of training;
    • How training will be pursued;
    • How training will promote the applicant's career in pediatric pathology.
  3. Itemized budget for travel and lodging expenses only (limit to 1 page; research support will not be funded)
  4. Letter of support from chief or laboratory director at institution that the applicant intends to visit, indicating approval of the proposed training experience
  5. Letter of support from the applicant's chief of staff for a pediatric pathologist or letter of support from pathology residency director for a pathology resident.
